How Jefferson City Erodes the Bill of Rights

The Jefferson City Council on Monday approved an ordinance that would prohibit the distribution of unsolicited documents.

What does this mean?

Does that mean we cannot distribute information about the garbage issue? That we cannot send unsolicited messages to voters? That we cannot send letters to the editor of a local newspaper or to our council members? That we have to have permission before we can email something to someone?

What does a prohibition of the distribution of unsolicited documents mean?

  1. It has now come to my attention--after a few phone calls--that the new ordinance should have been called "You cannot just throw flyers or other materials onto the lawns and sidewalks of the neighborhood because that's littering ordinance."

You can pass out flyers on the street. You just can't put them on the front porch of someone's house if they do not answer. And you can't place them on car handles or windshields because they may blow away.

  3. Wouldn't this include the flyer that was left on my door knob recently by the boy scouts for their annual food collection? This is stupid. The council has too much time on its hands. Has there really been a big problem? Is it too much for a property owner to put this stuff in the trash? I've never found an inordinate amount of it blowing here and there. And the flyers on windshields -- how many times do people pull those off and just throw them to the ground. This is all asinine.
